"The Glory"

John 17:22-26

The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

Introduction:Think of the simplicity of Jesus under the stars. Meditate upon the profundity of what he proposes.

Once again they were within sight of the Mount Of Olives. There was an end:

an end of preaching - an end of crowds - an end of miracles - and anticipation.

The temple was so sagely still. The holiest was empty behind its great veil. The Zadoks were no more. The musicians in a distant court softly played favorite hymns against the peace of the night. Jerusalem's short night was almost over. Neither Caiaphas not Jesus would sleep tonight.

The pious called out "May the All-Merciful make us worthy of the days of the Messiah." as the skeptical replied, "Let him split the great veil and then I'll believe." The good folks began the greeting of the double Sabbath, "God is indeed good to us."

Some temple cleansers in Solomon's porch and a temple policeman may have seen the little band. Ahead the cave and the stone where the Messiah would sweat blood. Just a few tiny lamps and some family fires.

  • Jesus' Profound Claim.
  • The Extensive Range of his Intercession.
  • The Glorious and Ultimate Goal.
  • His Twofold Mission.
  • His Everlasting Ministry.
  • Jesus' Profound Claim.

John 16:23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, if you ask anything of the Father, he will give it to you in my name.

John 16:26 In that day you will ask in my name; and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from the Father.

John 17:2 even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life.

  • The Extensive Range of His Intercession.

John 17:9 I am praying for them; I am not praying for the world but for those whom thou hast given me, for they are thine; all mine are thine, and thine are mine, and I am glorified in them.

A. A goal only a believer can receive.

B. If the world is to be changed - it begins here.

John 17:23 ... so that the world may know that thou hast sent me and hast loved them even as thou hast loved me.

  • The Glorious and Ultimate Goal.

John 17:22 The glory which thou hast given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one,

John 1:14 We beheld his glory

John 8:50 Yet I do not seek my own glory;

John 5:41 I do not receive glory from men.

1. He put his humanity at the disposal of his Father.

2. All his mind and his being - getting glory from no one else!

  • Demonstrating the Authority of God in His Flesh.
  • Giving Glory to the Father by Receiving Glory Only from the Father
  • Living the Impossible Life ------------ its Called Christian.

John 5:30

I can do nothing on my own authority; as I hear, I judge; and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.

  • His Twofold Mission.

John 17:18 As thou didst send me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.

John 17:21 that they may all be one; even as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

  • His Everlasting Ministry.

John 17:26

I made your name known to them, and I will make it known, so that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, as I in them.

THIS IS THE HOLY LIFE!

1 John 4:17 because as he is, so are we in this world.
