  1. The Text

  • The situation

Revelation 5:1-4

I saw in the right hand of the One who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides, sealed with seven seals. And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, "Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?" But there was no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth able to open the scroll to look inside it. Because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look inside it, I wept bitterly.

  • The remedy

Revelation 5:5-8

One of the elders said to me, "Do not weep; for the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has won, and so he is able to break the seals and open the scroll. Then I saw a Lamb, bearing the wounds of sacrifice, standing, in the midst of the throne, the elders, and the four living creatures. He had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. The Lamb went and received the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. When he did the four living beings and the twenty-four elders worshipped before the Lamb.

  • The moment of Revelation

Revelation 6:1

I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures say, in a voice like thunder, "Come!!"

  1. The Seals

    1. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

      1. Their parallel is the Four Chariots of Zechariah 6:1-7

        1. Four short cameos of “Come!” or “Go!”

        2. Four horsemen ride forth:

      2. The four chariots are “The Four Winds of Heaven”

        1. They represent the tides of human events

        2. The first century was about to experience

  1. First Seal - Religious Conquest, White Horse – note:

Revelation 19:11-16

I saw heaven open wide, and a white horse appeared; its rider was named Faithful and True, for he is just in judgment and war. His eyes flamed like fire, and on his head were many diadems; written on him was a name known to none but himself. He was robed in a garment dipped in blood, and he is called The Word of God. The armies of heaven followed him riding on white horses clothed in fine linen, pure and white. From his mouth came a sharp sword to smite the nations; for it is he who is to rule with a rod of iron, and tread the wine press of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh was written the title: “King of kings and Lord of lords.”

      1. This book is a revealing of Jesus Christ: it reveals him

      2. Before we get the other three horses we are reminded: who reigns and who goes forth

Revelation 6:2

Before my eyes was a white horse, and its rider held a bow. He was given a crown, and he rode forth, conquering and to conquer.

    1. Second Seal - Conflict & War, Red Horse

    2. Third Seal - Famine & Drought, Black Horse

    3. Fourth Seal - Death, Green or Pale Horse

      1. These parallel the events of Matthew 24

      2. When Jesus left Jerusalem’s temple

      3. Turn to Matthew 23 notice the Woes

Matthew 23:36-39

Truly, I say to you: this generation will not pass away until all of this will come upon it. O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, city that murders prophets and stones the messengers sent to you! How often I have longed to gather your children, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings; but you would not allow me! Behold, your house is forsaken and desolate. I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”

    1. The description of Matthew 24 and 25 is graphic and all true

      1. False prophets - Wars and rumors of wars

      2. The abomination of desolation - False Messiahs

      3. And then

Matthew 24:14

This gospel of the kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, as a testimony to all nations; and then the end will come.

    1. The end? There is a real end - Jesus will return

      1. The present age will become New Heavens and Earth

      2. Righteousness will be the nature of life on this planet

  1. The lesson

    1. Famine will come - Wars will come - Earth will have upheaval

    2. Some will be martyred Yet after the four horsemen we hear

Revelation 7:1-4

After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth, … Then I saw another angel ascend from the rising of the sun, with the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm earth and sea … “till we have sealed the servants of our God upon their foreheads."

      1. Again – this is like Zechariah 6:1-7

      2. 144,000 or the vastness of God’s Israel

    1. Then we see:

Revelation 7:9-17

After this I looked, and saw a vast throng which no man could count, from all nations, tribes, races and languages, standing before the throne and the Lamb. They were robed in white, and had palm branches in their hands, as they shouted aloud, "Salvation belongs to our God who sits upon the throne, and to the Lamb!" And all the angels stood round the throne and round the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, crying, "Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen." Then one of the elders turned to me, and asked, "Who are these, robed in white, and where did they come from?’ I answered him, "My lord, you know." And he said to me, "They are those who have come through great ordeal and have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. That is why they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple; and he who is upon the throne will shelter them with his presence. They shall never hunger again, neither thirst any more; the sun will not beat on them with scorching heat. The Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water; and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."

    1. See David’s theme

      1. Here the promises of God

      2. See the victory that none can take from you

    2. Our war is the Lord’s

    3. The victory is the Lord’s

    4. I will see you before the throne!!!
