When the Trumpets Sound”

August 22, 2010 AM

  1. Introduction

    1. The scene is one of glory

Revelation 8:1-5

When the Lamb broke the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for what seemed a half an hour. Then I saw the seven angels who stand in the presence of God were given seven trumpets.

Then another angel came and stood at the altar, holding a golden censer; he was given a great quantity of incense to offer with the prayers of all of God’s people upon the golden altar before the throne. From the smoke of that incense rose with the prayers of the God’s holy people into the presence of God. Then the angel took the censer, filled it with alter fire, and threw it down on the earth, where there were peals of thunder, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.

    1. Then these stark words:

Revelation 8:6

Then the seven angels who held the seven trumpets prepared to blow them.

    1. Further on we read:

Revelation 10:1-6

Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven. He was wrapped in a cloud, with a rainbow around his head, and his face shone like the sun, and his legs like pillars of fire. In his hand he held a little open scroll. And he planted his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land, and shouted out in a loud voice, like a lion’s roar; and when he shouted, the seven thunders sounded. I was about to write what the seven thunders said, but I heard a voice from heaven saying, "Seal up what the seven thunders speak, and do not write it down." Then as I watched the angel standing on the sea and land raised his right hand to heaven and swore by him who lives forever and ever, who created heaven, earth, and the sea and what is in them, that time would be no more!

  1. Silence in Heaven

    1. Originally God created the heavens and the earth

      1. He broke the silence and spoke

      2. Revelation is speaking to us of an all new creation

        1. The old order is falling and passing

        2. Former covenants are being finalized

Romans 8:19-23

All creation eagerly awaits the revealing of the sons of God; for the creation was subjected to decay, not of its own choice but by the will of him who designed it so in hope; for creation itself is to be set free from its enslavement to decay and obtain the freedom and glory of the children of God. We know that presently the entire universe groans in labor, and not simply creation, but we ourselves, who are the first harvest of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait for God to make us sons and redeem our bodies.

        1. Creation is in birth labor

    1. Hear the song of heaven

Revelation 14:6-8

I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to every nation and tribe and language and race living on earth. He cried aloud, “Reverence God and grant him glory, for the hour of his judgment has come! Worship him who created heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water." Another angel, a second, followed him, proclaiming, "Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great, she who made all nations drunk in the wine of her lust for sexual immorality."

      1. This was the coming collapse of Rome

      2. Here was world wide shift and crises

        1. In words that mirror the Egyptian plagues

        2. In language of Israel

    1. The heavens are shaken: Jerusalem is finished

      1. How will it be written?

      2. In the language of apocalypse

Revelation 11:7-8

When the witnesses have finished their testimony, the beast that rises from the bottomless pit will make war on them and over power them and kill them, and their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city who is called in allegory Sodom and Egypt, the city where their Lord was crucified.

      1. In the language of the apostles:

Galatians 4:22-31

It is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman and the other by his free-born wife. The slave woman’s son was born through the flesh, while the son of the free-born woman was born through promise. This is an allegory: these two women are the two covenants: the one bears children from slavery and is Mount Sinai; she is Hagar. Sinai is a mountain in Arabia and it stands for the present Jerusalem: she and her children are in slavery. But the Jerusalem from above is free; she is our mother. It is written, "Rejoice, barren one who never gave birth; break into a shout of joy, you who never knew labor! For the deserted wife will have more offspring than the one who has a husband.” We, my brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise. But just as in those days: the child born through the flesh persecuted the child born by the Spirit, so also it is today. The Scriptures say: "Drive out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave-woman shall not share in the inheritance of the son of the free-woman." You see, brothers, we are the children of freedom, not bondage.

  1. Do you not know? Have you not heard?

    1. We are come to the New Jerusalem

      1. We are the new mount Zion

      2. We are the Israel of God

Hebrews 12:22-24

You have come to Mount Zion, the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, in the presence of countless angels, into an assembly of the first-born who are of heaven’s rolls, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the those made right and complete – that is to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, whose sprinkled blood speaks better things than the blood of Abel.

    1. Hence – know this

      1. Famines will come - war and tragedy will appear

      2. You live in unstable times

        1. But God is at work

        2. God reigns

        3. God is going to keep his word

Luke 21:33

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

2 Peter 3:11-14

Since all the universe is to break up in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be – living lives in holiness and godliness. Live waiting for the coming of the day of God, and work to hasten it on; in that day the heavens will be ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt in flames! But according to his promise we wait for new heavens and a new earth, the home of righteousness. Therefore, beloved, since you long for these, be zealous to be found by him above reproach, and at peace.

    1. Heaven is worshipping – are we

    2. God is reigning – even on Patmos you can see it!
