"Come let us adore him"

Please turn to Romans 12:1-10 Page 1302

Philippians 3:3

For we are the true circumcision, who worship God in spirit, and glory in Christ Jesus, and put no confidence in the flesh.

Introduction:

When the messengers of John had left, He began to speak to the crowds about John, "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? Luke 7:24 Why are we here? Why are you here?

We are about life. To grasp and comprehend it.

To make sense of our existence. TO MAKE LIFE MEANINGFUL. If there are values that are fixed in creation ???

If society has values - - - then ours ought to be different.

Or, why are we here?

I. THIS IS CHURCH. THE CHURCH OF THE LIVING GOD.

A. Premise: there is a God.

B. Premise: we may and can know him.

1. The message of Israel, "Hear O Israel!"

2. And Jesus, He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

Hebrews 1:2 God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, has spoken to us in these last days in a Son,

II. GOD IS THE SOURCE (FATHER) OF ALL THAT IS.

A. "I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of ..."

1. That this God has established the agenda, (how things work and will work). We discover.

2. God chose the Messiah method.

2 Cor. 5:19 God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation.

2. The Messiah was God's vessel.

B. THE WAY - TRUTH - LIFE. The light of the world.

1. We are hear because God determined this.

2. Jesus created the church.

3. He is unique. He reigns...he establishes what & how.

III JESUS IS THE ONE AND ONLY IN HIS BEING.

A. This is why he was in trouble and finally executed.

1. Unique in his origin.

2. Unique in his life.

3. Unique in his mission.

4. Unique in his death.

B. He stood in the place reserved for God.

"I believe in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord - who ..."

C. John 15:26

When the Counselor comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, HE WILL BEAR WITNESS TO ME;

1. Jesus preached, but we preach Jesus.

2. We are sent to tell the cross, again and again.

* Point Loma professor.

IV. THE COMMUNION OF SAINTS - THE BODY OF CHRIST.

A. COMMUNION:

1. With someone else.

2. With each other.

3. With God.

B. We have something in common that others, no matter how close, do not share.

1. A different people.

2. A people made different.

3. Different for a reason, which is why the Son came.

Hebrews 13:12

So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood.

Hebrews 13:15

Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.

C. Jesus acted for a purpose.

D. We were recreated for a purpose - our mission.

V. HOW ARE WE DIFFERENT?

A. "For Jesus sake."

B. This is why we were saved. To live in glory for glory.

1. What is that like?

2. How do we do it?

C. The goal of God is a people of praise = WORSHIP!Ephesians 2:10

For we are his workmanship (POEM), created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

D. This is worship:

1. It begins in relationship with others. Matthew 5:23

So if you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,

2. It transcends the competing values. Matthew 6:1 "Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

Your life must worship - poured out

if you have wronged another

if you are behind in charity

If you need to heal a breach

E. Worship transcends relationships in this world.

1. How we see God.

2. How we see ourselves.

3. How we live.

Ephesians 5:18

And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart, always and for everything giving thanks in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father.

VI. HOW CAN THESE THINGS COME TO PASS?

*Now the burning issue: Which worship style pleases God!

Romans twelve: God's worship service=

1. "I exhort you" Parakalw/ = God's preaching through the church.

2. "Through God's compassion" = God permits and God initiates.

3. "Present yourselves" = Used of presenting the child Jesus in the temple (Lu 2:22), of God presenting the saved (Eph 5:27), of Christ presenting the church (Col 1:28).

4. Bodies (swmata). The total person in contrast with nouj (mind)

5. A living sacrifice.

In contrast with the Levitical sacrifices of slain animals. Not a propitiatory sacrifice, but one of praise.

6. Acceptable (euareston). "Well-pleasing."

7. (thn logikhn u`mwn). "Your rational (spiritual) service (worship)."

Using priestly language.

8. Do not have the habit of being conformed. suschmatizw, Do not take this age as your model.

9. Be transformed (metamorfousqe). Present passive imperative .

A. "by the renewing of your mind"

B. That you may test God's will,

10. "the good and acceptable and perfect (complete and final)"

(to agaqon kai euareston kai teleion).

11. Not to think of himself more highly than he ought. "over-think"

Self-conceit is here treated as a species of insanity.

A measure of faith (metron pistewj).

Each has his gift from God (1Co 3:5; 4:7).

12. "Which God assigned" God's ministry in his manner.

A. God the great composer and conductor.

B. "Well pleasing to God" - *"I'm not being used enough"

"WITH CHEERFULNESS"

Conclusion:

We must make the journey into Israel:

1. First have an exodus. come out of the service of idols.

2. Go to Sinai and receive God's law. Let him reign.

3. Make a tent of meeting. The tent comes before the sacrifice.

4. Cross over the Jordan circumcise your spirit.

THE WAY TO WORSHIP CHRIST IS THE WAY OF CHRIST.

"True Religion"

Text: Matthew 13:3-23 Page 1098

Matthew 13:11

And he answered them, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.

Mark 4:13

And he said to them, "Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables?

Introduction:

Acts 17:22 - 23

So Paul, standing in the middle of the Areopagus, said: "Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. For as I passed along, and observed the objects of your worship,

I found also an altar with this inscription, `TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.' What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you.

Paul's observations were of the religious (superstitious) nature of the people that he was sent to convert. This same Paul would endure tremendous affliction for that conversion and eventually yield his life. In the days of the Old Covenant the LORD was known as the Hebrew God, or the God of the Israelites. Egypt had her god, the Greeks had their gods - and there was the "God of Abraham." The conflicts will be between gods and God =Exodus 5:1 "Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, `Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.'" So God would say,

Leviticus 26:12 I will walk among you, and be your God, and you shall be my people.

Today we are returning in many ways to the days of the Old Covenant. Unintentionally we have adopted the idea that TOLERANCE is a virtue and EVANGELISM is bigotry. We avoid such truth as: Ephesians 4:17

Now this I affirm and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds; they are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart; they have become callous and have given themselves up to licentiousness, greedy to practice every kind of uncleanness. You did not so learn Christ! --

I. HOLY SCRIPTURE STATES THERE IS ONE WAY!

A. Colossians 2:20 If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the universe, why do you live as if you still belonged to the world? Why do you submit to regulations, "Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch"referring to things which all perish as they are used), according to human precepts and doctrines?

These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting rigor of devotion and self-abasement and severity to the body, but they are of no value in checking the indulgence of the flesh.

B. And Paul also cautions -

We are to work out our own salvation with fear (Phil 21:12).

And we must guard our lives from the inner person:

Romans 14:22

The faith which you have, have as your own conviction before God. Blessed is person who does not condemn himself in what he approves.

We must not compromise our inner peace.

Surrender to pressure may be too costly.

C. In Acts 15 there was a great debate between members of the early church on what made fro authentic religion. Did it include the Law? Was it still centered in Israel? Paul answered:

Acts 15:11

Now therefore why do you make trial of God by putting a yoke upon the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear? But we believe that we shall be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as they will."

D. The very concept of "saved and Lost" implies there is a true way and a false way. We must not be deceived!

II. AVOIDING ERROR.

A. 1 Corinthians 3:19 Beware of the wisdom trap.

Let no one deceive himself. If any one among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, "He catches the wise in their craftiness,"

B. Ephesians 5:5 Beware of the seducers.

Be sure of this, that no fornicator or impure man, or one who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for it is because of these things that the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

C. 1 John 1:8 Beware of false holiness.

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

D. Galatians 6:7 Beware of the false grace gospel.

Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.

1 Corinthians 6:9

Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither the immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor sexual perverts nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God. E. 2 Corinthians 11:3 Beware of your mind.

But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.

III. LEARN THE GREAT PARABLE! See Matt 13:37-50

A. The sower sows the word. (The same SOWER to all)

1. The sower is the Lord.

2. The agent is his spirit.

B. The same word in every situation.

C. The variant is in the reception.

1. Path people: Unreceptive through a hardening life.

* Satan makes them unreceptive.

** birds represent thoughts of this age.

2. Shallow people: they receive superficially.

* Shallow roots mean shallow commitment.

** "Immediately they fall away.

3. Thorn People: they have a preoccupied life

* The deceitfulness of riches is false values.

** The word is unfruitful.

Matthew 13:58

And he did not do many mighty works there, because of their unbelief.

4. The abundant ones: ready for the word.

CONCLUSION:

True Religion Does Not Come Through Unusual Circumstances

but / Rather Through Unusual Preparations For God's Work.
