Revelation

Luke 24:13-32

That same day (Resurrection Sunday), two of them were on their way to a village called Emmaus about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were conversing about all that had happened. In the midst of their discussion Jesus himself joined them, but something prevented their eyes from recognizing him. He asked them, "What is it you are discussing so seriously as you walk?" Looking very sad they paused, and one called Cleopas, answered, "You must be the only person who stayed in Jerusalem not to know the things that have been happening there these last few days." Jesus asked, "What things?" They replied, "About Jesus of Nazareth, who by deeds and mighty words demonstrated himself to be a prophet in the sight of God and all the people. Our chief priests and rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they had him crucified. We had hoped he would be the liberator of Israel. What is more this is the third day since it all happened; and some women of our group (Mary of Magdala, Joanna, Mary the mother of Jesus and James, and others) have astounded us. They went to the tomb in the early morning, and when they could not find the body, they came back to tell us they had seen a vision of angels who declared he was alive. Then some of our company went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him." Then he said to them, "Be more thoughtful, your hearts are so slow to trust all that the prophets have declared! Was not the Messiah bound to suffer these things before entering into his glory?" Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he opened the whole of the scriptures to them about himself.

By this time they reached the village to which they were going, and Jesus walked on as if to continue on. But they urged him, "Stay with us, for evening approaches and the day is almost gone." So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he said the blessing; he broke the bread and offered it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, "Were not our hearts on fire as he talked with us on the way and explained the scriptures?"

  1. Jesus the loser – the world had won:

    1. He had died miserably
    2. His church had been proven powerless
    3. He created hope – and had not fulfilled it

2 Corinthians 13:4

He was crucified in weakness, but lives by the power of God; so you will find that we who are weak in him will live with him by the power of God.

  1. It was Time to go home – All is confusion
    1. He had told us to not be troubled
    2. Hebrews 6:11-12

Our desire is that each of you maintain the same enthusiasm until the fulfillment of your hope, never growing careless, but taking as your model those who through faith and perseverance are heirs of the promises.

      1. But in his failure – his promises failed
      2. We had followed him all across Judea and Galilee
    3. Many had left businesses and family
    4. It was time to restore what had been left behind

  1. Jesus drew near – joining us in The Way
    1. Jesus enters our conversation in the midst
    2. He opens our minds
    3. He re-orders reality –
      1. Their hearts were on fire before they understood
      2. He gives (new) meaning to scriptures

  1. Jesus moves on unless invited to abide

    1. He dwells where he is accepted – wanted
    2. If he tarries – he reigns (he is head of the table)
    3. This brings revelation – understood through reflection

John 1:18

No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is of the bosom of the Father, who has made him known.

  1. Revelation lives in Reflection

    1. Once they knew him – they could reflect
    2. They could make sense of their walk
    3. Now they were ready to help others
