The Goal of Life 2 - The Call to Become

(What I Believe Concerning Entire Sanctification)

  1. Introduction
    1. Last Sunday evening I began a message on God’s work in our existence - the life of God given to us in Christ
      1. I spoke of truth we must review:

    • Christianity is participation in God’s life
    • This is through the Spirit
    • Without Christ’s Spirit we are not his

      1. The key must not be missed
        1. God in Christ united us to him
        2. That life which is the source of all
        3. This is through the Spirit

    1. Christianity is life in and through Christ – the Spirit
    2. 2 Corinthians 3:17-18

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. All of us having unveiled our face are seeing in a mirror the glory of the Lord, and we are being transformed into the same likeness. This is from the Lord who is the Spirit.

      Romans 8:28-29

We know that God works in all things for the good of those who love him and are called to his will - for those whom he foreknew he also destined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

    3. The issue is the new creation
      1. God invaded human life in Jesus
        1. In Jesus God (the Godhead) fully resided
        2. Colossians 2:9

In Christ the whole fullness (complete being of God NEB) of deity dwells embodied, and in him you have been filled, …

        3. In his life new creation began

      2. He was the source of life beyond the animal

    4. This is the kingdom – The Reign of God
      1. What came in him was life
      2. Life beyond existence – TRUE LIFE

John 3:16

God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.

1 John 5:11

This is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

  1. The Good News – Christ’s life is now ours
    1. All the old forms of religion are gone
      1. External practices gave way to a new reality of life
      2. 2 Corinthians 5:17

Anyone in Christ is a new creation; the old order is gone, behold, the new has come. Galatians 6:14

May I never glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world! Circumcision is nothing; uncircumcision is nothing; all that counts is new creation.

      3. The chosen nation (race) of priests
      4. Holy days and feasts are past and all is "in Christ"

      Colossians 2:16

Allow no one to judge you in questions of food and drink, or over observance of festival or new moon or Sabbath. These are only shadows of the real thing, Christ himself.

    2. The new age of the Spirit has come
      1. Christ is now our Passover - replacing Israel
      2. Christ is all and in all

      John 14:6

Jesus said to him, "I am the way; I am the truth; I am the life; no one comes to the Father except through me."

    3. This life is now God in us – the hope of Glory
      1. As he left us he gave us assurances and a promise
        1. He passed the Spirit of God to his new body
        2. John 14:17

I will pray the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, to be with you forever, the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

        3. Now the Spirit would live in us – his church

      2. Where Christ was while in the flesh is our new being
      3. Jesus made it clear that this was God himself

      John 14:23

Jesus replied: Anyone who loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we shall come to him and make a home in him.

    4. This then is the heart of our Lord’s ministry in (to) us
      1. He prayed for our union with him (as God)

      John 17:11

I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.

      John 17:20-

It is not for these alone that I pray, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me. May they all be one; as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, so also may they be in us, that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one, as we are one; as I am in them and you in me, may they be wholly one. Then the world will know that you have sent me and have loved them as you have loved me. My desire, Father, is that those, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am so that they may behold my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. Righteous Father, although the world does not know you, I know you; and these know that you have sent me. I made your name known to them, and will make it known, so that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.

    5. This is the life we are now to have
      1. We are to see ourselves as God’s offspring
      2. His Spirit has made us his dwelling place

    6. Therefore we are to live conformed to Christ (like him)
      1. This life centers in his
      2. All believers are called to what Paul professed

    Colossians 3:1-4

I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

  2. The Upward Call
    1. From the moment of salvation you are being conformed
      1. The standard for all disciples calls at your soul
      2. Luke 9:23-25

If anyone would follow me, let him renounce himself and bear his cross daily and walk with me. Whoever would preserve his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake, he will save it. What benefit is it to anyone to win the whole world and forfeit or lose his very self?

        1. This is so even if you never heard a sermon
        2. Christ wants your full sanctification

      3. The cross of Christ speaks

To your ethics To your habits To your affections

    2. Now the issue of conformity to Christ comes to our inner life
    3. Will we be conformed to our age or the Lord
      1. Can we be rejected and forsaken as he
      2. Dare we be shaped by his inner purity

    4. This is not natural to believers
      1. Paul called to converted to a higher life
      2. He calls to us to live in the fullness
      3. Ephesians 3:14 –21

I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name, that out of the treasure of his glory he may grant you the strength and power, through his Spirit in your inner being, that through faith Christ may dwell in your hearts in love. May you be grounded with deep root and have the ability to comprehend with all the saints the breadth and length and height and depth of the love of Christ - to comprehend that which surpasses knowledge – so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

        1. He who lived only to his Father’s will
        2. Held by the inner light of his Spirit

    5. That same Spirit purifies those he indwells
      1. To be fully consecrated as he was united with him
      2. To live with your heart crucified to him (his will)
      3. This is the holy life – the second work of grace

John 17:19

For their sake I sanctify myself, that they also may be sanctified2 in reality.
