The Call of God

Romans 1:1-7 ESV

Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.

To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 1:1-7 GAH

Christ Jesus’ slave: Paul, an apostle called and commissioned to the gospel, which God foretold through the prophets in Scripture. The gospel is about his Son – Jesus Christ our Lord - a descendant of David according to the flesh, but powerfully declared God’s Son according to the Spirit of holiness through resurrection from the dead. Through him and for his name’s sake we have received this grace and apostolic commission to bring all nations into the obedience of faith - including you who are being called to belong to Jesus Christ.

To all whom God loves and calls to be holy in Rome: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ.

Introduction

    1. You have a name:
      1. When we hear it we think of you
      2. It is how you are called

    2. God also has a name for you
      1. Foretold of old
      2. Isaiah 62:2

The nations shall see your vindication, and its kings your glory; for you shall be called by a new name which the LORD will give to you.

      3. Promised again in Christ

Revelation 3:12

If you conquer, I will make you a pillar in the temple of my God; you will never go out of it. I will write on you the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem that comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name.

We are to know how we are called … into what we are called

  1. PAUL - GOD’S INSTRUMENT.
    1. Call me Paul
      1. Saul – the proud name of the original and only King of all Israel. He was from the tribe of Benjamin. Paul’s Hebrew pride has been changed.
      2. All who are "in Christ" receive a new name for their new birth. (Isaiah 62:2; Revelation 2:17; Revelation 3:12)

    2. Call me special
    3. Galatians 1:15

When God, who had set me apart before I was born, called me through his grace,

    4. SET APART’
      1. The Pharisees were known as the "separated ones." Paul is now separated for the gospel. He is a Pharisee to God’s word. (Leviticus 20:26)
      2. God called – not man – yet approved by men

    5. Affirmed through the church – Acts 9:15 But the Lord said to him, "Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel; for I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name."
    6. Affirmed in the church - Acts 13:2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them."
      1. What this means is the one thing I do.
      2. Galatians 1:1 Paul, an apostle (not sent from men, nor through the agency of man)

    7. Call me God’s instrument
      1. Paul saw himself as horizoned or boundaried by a life selected by God specifically and exclusively to proclaim the faith of Jesus. He lived in a "one of a kind" relationship with God and the other apostles.
        1. All else was called lost (Philippians 3:7)
        2. For Paul Christ is life (Philippians 1:21)

      2. He was a vessel chosen with a mission (Romans 11:13; 2 Corinthians 5:18)
      3. Specifically called to the non-Jews of earth

    8. Paul is a spiritual Pharisee
      1. Separated not to the oral tradition or code
      2. To God's gospel, a chosen vessel

  2. DO YOU KNOW YOUR CALLING?
    1. Every believer is called:

Romans 8:29 NEB

God knew his own before ever they were and also ordained that they should be shaped to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the eldest among a large family of brothers; and it is these whom he has called.

    1. Paul speaks of us as called unto:
      1. Ephesians 1:16-18 I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,
      2. We are to know our calling
      3. Matthew 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen.

      4. And to respond to it

    2. You have been called to God

Hebrews 5:4

One does not take the honor upon one’s self, but is called by God

    1. Called to a family resemblance

1 Thessalonians 4:7

For God has not called us for uncleanness, but in holiness.

    1. We are called through God’s Sprit
    2. To live in his Spirit

  1. WHO IS JESUS TO YOU?
    1. Has he become the source of life? … "Through whom and in whose name"
    2. Is he your spiritual center? … "I thank my God through Jesus Christ"
    3. 1 Corinthians 1:2

Those sanctified in Christ Jesus are called to be saints together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ

    4. Is he … God, whom I serve in the spirit in his Son

  2. WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT IS YOUR OBLIGATION TO JESUS?
    1. Paul knew his calling:
      1. To Greek and non-Greek, to wise and uninformed,
      2. Emphasis is on the obligation accruing from debt

    2. A debtor:
      1. Romans 15:27 they were pleased to do it, and indeed they are in debt to them, for if the Gentiles have come to share in their spiritual blessings, they ought also to be of service to them in material blessings.
      2. Paul’s debt was global (every level of humanity)

    3. TO WHOM IS YOUR OBLIGATION?
    4. 1 Peter 1:15

      As he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct;

    5. What are your excuses?
      1. We are Christian – bearing his name
      2. Isaiah 43:1

Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.

      3. 2 Peter 1:3 Seeing that his divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and excellence

Colossians 3:15

And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful.

Yes

2 Cor. 1:12-24 (ESV)

For our boast is this: the testimony of our conscience that we behaved in the world with simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God, and supremely so toward you. For we are not writing to you anything other than what you read and acknowledge and I hope you will fully acknowledge— just as you did partially acknowledge us, that on the day of our Lord Jesus you will boast of us as we will boast of you.

[15] Because I was sure of this, I wanted to come to you first, so that you might have a second experience of grace. I wanted to visit you on my way to Macedonia, and to come back to you from Macedonia and have you send me on my way to Judea. Was I vacillating when I wanted to do this? Do I make my plans according to the flesh, ready to say "Yes, yes" and "No, no" at the same time? As surely as God is faithful, our word to you has not been Yes and No. For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you, Silvanus and Timothy and I, was not Yes and No, but in him it is always Yes. For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory. And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.

[23] But I call God to witness against me—it was to spare you that I refrained from coming again to Corinth. Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm in your faith.

Text: 2 Corinthians 1:20

For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why we utter the Amen through him, to the glory of God

Introduction:

Paul testifies that he has experienced a near death. It was such that he thought that the resurrection was his only hope: 2 Cor. 1:9 Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead.

Yet, in this he has a twofold glory or values (ENG- boast)

  1. Not in fleshly wisdom
  2. But in the clear conscience
    1. Simplicity – singleness of devotion - holiness
    2. Sincerity of God

1 Timothy 1:5

Whereas the aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith.

Paul rehearses the joys they could receive from each other

An experience he wishes for but n was hindered

An experience of second grace

For all true moments between believers is in grace

2Co 1:16 - And again

This would have been the second benefit or joy. But he changed his plans and did not make that trip directly to Corinth, but came on to Macedonia first (Ac 19:21; 20:1f. 1Co 16:2; 2Co 2:12).

  1. 1:17 - Did I show fickleness?

    1. is a late word for levity
    2. James 5:12

But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath, but let your yes be yes and your no be no, that you may not fall under condemnation.

    3. It is plain in Jas 5:12 where "the yea" is "yea" and "the nay" is "nay." That seems to be Paul's meaning here, "that the Yea may be yea and the Nay may be nay."
      1. The power of your word
      2. The decisive ness of the godly
    4. Paul then makes his strong defense of his decision making
      1. It is not like the fleshly minds
        1. Men of the flesh debate their lives
        2. The must weigh the alternatives
    5. The problem of endless discussions
      1. They neutralize truth
      2. James 1:7

For that person must not suppose that a double-minded man,

      3. 2 Cor. 1:17 Was I vacillating when I wanted to do this? Do I make my plans according to the flesh, ready to say, "Yes, yes" and "No, no" at the same time?
      4. Colossians 2:8

See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.

        1. Seeming discussions of wisdom may be simple brain games
        2. We live in an hour of endless opinions

1 Timothy 1:6

Some men, straying from these things, have turned aside to fruitless discussion, wanting to be teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions.

    1. 1 Timothy 1:4 As I urge you … that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, nor to occupy themselves with myths and endless genealogies which promote speculations rather than the divine training that is in faith;
      1. Why do we halt between two decisions
      2. Elijah 1Kings 18:21
      1. Some things must be settled
  1. The Settled State in Christ
    1. Jesus was never in debate
      1. 2Co 1:18 - Is not yea and nay.
      2. He is not a Yes and No man,
        1. In him was the Yea come true."
        2. John 8:29

He who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what is pleasing to him.

          Hebrews 10:7

Then I said, `Lo, I have come to do thy will, O God,' as it is written of me in the roll of the book."

        3. He was the Word
        4. In him all is Yes toward God
    2. 2Co 1:21 - Establishes
    3. How does the Lord make us ‘steadfast’?
      1. Through the anointing of his own nature
      2. Anointed to consecrate,
      3. Sealed us To give validity to documents, to guarantee genuineness of articles as sealing sacks and chests
        1. The earnest of the Spirit.
        2. A word of Semitic origin (possibly Phoenician)
        3. It is common in the papyri as earnest money in a purchase for a cow or for a wife (a dowry

      2 Corinthians 5:5

He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

    4. ). In N.T. only here; 5:5; Eph 1:14.
    5. What is to be our role:
      1. We are the Amen of God in the face of three worlds
      2. As Jesus was yes to God we are the chorus.

      Hebrews 4:15

For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

    6. However many God’s promise - Jesus was the full yes
      1. For this reason
        1. Through him also
        2. WE

CONCLUSION We use words: Steadfast, unmoved, and dependable -

Colossians 1:22

He has reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and irreproachable before him, provided that you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel which you heard, which has been preached to everyone under heaven - of which I, Paul, became a minister.
