Nashville’s First Church of the Nazarene January 6, 2002 A.M. The Call of God Romans 1:1-7 ESV Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ. To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 1:1-7 GAH Christ Jesus’ slave: Paul, an apostle called and commissioned to the gospel, which God foretold through the prophets in Scripture. The gospel is about his Son – Jesus Christ our Lord - a descendant of David according to the flesh, but powerfully declared God’s Son according to the Spirit of holiness through resurrection from the dead. Through him and for his name’s sake we have received this grace and apostolic commission to bring all nations into the obedience of faith - including you who are being called to belong to Jesus Christ. To all whom God loves and calls to be holy in Rome: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. Introduction
Isaiah 62:2 The nations shall see your vindication, and its kings your glory; for you shall be called by a new name which the LORD will give to you. Revelation 3:12 If you conquer, I will make you a pillar in the temple of my God; you will never go out of it. I will write on you the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem that comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name. We are to know how we are called … into what we are called
Galatians 1:15 When God, who had set me apart before I was born, called me through his grace, Romans 8:29 NEB God knew his own before ever they were and also ordained that they should be shaped to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the eldest among a large family of brothers; and it is these whom he has called.
Matthew 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen. Hebrews 5:4 One does not take the honor upon one’s self, but is called by God 1 Thessalonians 4:7 For God has not called us for uncleanness, but in holiness.
1 Corinthians 1:2 Those sanctified in Christ Jesus are called to be saints together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ
1 Peter 1:15 As he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct;
Isaiah 43:1 Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. Colossians 3:15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful.
Pastor Henecke's PM Sermon Outline Nashville’s First Church of the Nazarene January 6, 2002 PM Yes 2 Cor. 1:12-24 (ESV) For our boast is this: the testimony of our conscience that we behaved in the world with simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God, and supremely so toward you. For we are not writing to you anything other than what you read and acknowledge and I hope you will fully acknowledge— just as you did partially acknowledge us, that on the day of our Lord Jesus you will boast of us as we will boast of you. [15] Because I was sure of this, I wanted to come to you first, so that you might have a second experience of grace. I wanted to visit you on my way to Macedonia, and to come back to you from Macedonia and have you send me on my way to Judea. Was I vacillating when I wanted to do this? Do I make my plans according to the flesh, ready to say "Yes, yes" and "No, no" at the same time? As surely as God is faithful, our word to you has not been Yes and No. For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you, Silvanus and Timothy and I, was not Yes and No, but in him it is always Yes. For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory. And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. [23] But I call God to witness against me—it was to spare you that I refrained from coming again to Corinth. Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm in your faith. Text: 2 Corinthians 1:20 For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why we utter the Amen through him, to the glory of God Introduction: Paul testifies that he has experienced a near death. It was such that he thought that the resurrection was his only hope: 2 Cor. 1:9 Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. Yet, in this he has a twofold glory or values (ENG- boast)
1 Timothy 1:5 Whereas the aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith. Paul rehearses the joys they could receive from each other An experience he wishes for but n was hindered An experience of second grace For all true moments between believers is in grace 2Co 1:16 - And again This would have been the second benefit or joy. But he changed his plans and did not make that trip directly to Corinth, but came on to Macedonia first (Ac 19:21; 20:1f. 1Co 16:2; 2Co 2:12).
James 5:12 But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath, but let your yes be yes and your no be no, that you may not fall under condemnation. James 1:7 For that person must not suppose that a double-minded man, Colossians 2:8 See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ. 1 Timothy 1:6 Some men, straying from these things, have turned aside to fruitless discussion, wanting to be teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions.
John 8:29 He who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what is pleasing to him. Hebrews 10:7 Then I said, `Lo, I have come to do thy will, O God,' as it is written of me in the roll of the book."
2 Corinthians 5:5 He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.
Hebrews 4:15 For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
CONCLUSION We use words: Steadfast, unmoved, and dependable - Colossians 1:22 He has reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and irreproachable before him, provided that you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel which you heard, which has been preached to everyone under heaven - of which I, Paul, became a minister. |
