Pillars in the House of God

  1. The shortest of the seven letters reads:

Revelation 3:7-13 REB

To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of the Holy One, the True One, who has David’s key, so that when he opens the door, no one can shut it, and when he shuts it, no one can open it. "'I know what you are doing. I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know your strength is small, yet you have observed my command and have not disowned my name. As for those of the Satan’s synagogue who falsely claim to be Jews, I will make them come and fall down at your feet; and they will know that you are my beloved people. Because you have kept my command to stand firm, I will also keep you from the ordeal that is to fall on the whole world, to test its inhabitants. I am coming soon; hold fast what you have, and let no one rob you of your crown. The one who is victorious, I shall make a pillar in the temple of my God; they will remain there forever. I shall write on them the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven, from my God, and my own new name. You have ears, so hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

  1. Pillars in God’s House

    1. The Hebrew people would have known this reference at once

      1. God had led Israel as a pillar in the desert

1 Kings 7:20-22

Solomon set up the pillars at the vestibule of the temple. He set up the pillar on the south and called its name Jachin, and he set up the pillar on the north and called its name Boaz. The capitals of the Temple were on the two pillars and also above the rounded projection which was beside the latticework. There were two hundred pomegranates in two rows all around, and so with the other capital. On the tops of the pillars was lily-work. Thus the work of the pillars was finished.

      1. Solomon had created the first Temple around two pillars: the names denote “He will establish,” and “In him is strength.”

    1. Let’s see it

    2. Two brass pillars named Boaz and Jachin stood in the porch of the Temple. (1 Kings 7:15; 7:21; 2 Kings 11:14; 23:3). Boaz stood on the left (the north) and Jachin on the right (the south). They measured 27 feet high and 6 feet wide, with a hollow of 4 fingers thick. Their 8-foot (2.4 m) high brass

capitals were decorated with 200 carved brass pomegranates, wreathed with seven chains and topped with lilies. (1 Kings 7:13-22, 41-42; 2 Chronicles 4:13) They are from "right" and "left" from a viewpoint of a person leaving the temple. They are of course viewed when entering and departing the temple. A worshiper always passed them to come to God - all Israel was not allowed to pass.

    1. God is making this church a promise

      1. Remember the last verse

      2. This may be our promise also

  • No one can shut the door I set before you

  • I will write the name of God on you

  • You will remain forever

  • All who worship will pass by you – all who come to God will see you

E. This promise is not just for ancient Philadelphia

  1. Philadelphia

    1. This church is the one without correction from Jesus

      1. One in seven – the remnant

        1. First – the real church is within the church

The Real Church Is Found Within the Church

        1. Second – we can be true inspiration of our hour

      1. Every promise is ours

    1. The one that no one can over rule has ruled for us

      1. He sets before us an open door

        1. Who sets it?

Romans 8:31-39

What then shall we say to all these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died- more than that, who was raised- who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, "For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered." No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

        1. Who can change it?

    1. What is the Open door?

      1. Christ himself!

      2. Nothing less

    2. What does one do with the door? Walk through it!

      1. Absolute access to the Master

      2. The pillars are at the entrance

        1. Only priests can enter

        2. That is why these believers are here

    3. This is the promise of Abraham coming to us

Exodus 19:5

Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.

Revelation 1:5

Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth - he who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

    1. All of this is spiritual words as Jesus said

      1. Folks I want this for my home

      2. I want this for myself

        1. To be victories in God’s eyes

        2. To be the door posts into his presence

        3. To bear the holy name – identified with him

        4. To be at home in glory

  1. The Promise is Ours!

You have ears, so hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

Vomit Religion

  1. The Church In Whom He Found No Praise:

Revelation 3:14-22 REB

To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: “These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the source of God's creation. I know what you are doing: you are neither cold nor hot! How I wish that you were either cold or hot! Because you are neither one nor the other, but just lukewarm, I will spit you out of my mouth. You say, ‘How rich am I! What a fortune I have made! I have everything I want.’ In fact you are a pitiful wretch, poor, blind, and naked. I advise you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, and white robes to put on to hide the shame of your nakedness, and ointment for your eyes so that you may see. All whom I love I reprove and discipline. Be wholehearted therefore and repent; here, I stand knocking at the door; if anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and he and I will eat together. To anyone who is victorious I will grant a place with me on my throne, as I also was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne. You who have ears, hear what the Spirit says to the churches."

  1. Two letters

    1. The Philadelphia church – Jesus says no faults

      1. They are poor and have little power

      2. They are giving - Phileo

    2. The Laodicea Church – Jesus sees no good

      1. They are wealthy and claim great power

      2. They are self preservers

      3. Laodicea was a banking centre and a textile town and so was fairly wealthy

      4. This church failed to find in Christ the source of all true wealth, glory and vision

Here this church stands in stark contrast with the Church at Smyrna which was materially poor, and yet Christ called them "rich." Contrariwise, the church of Laodicea professed to "have need of nothing" and yet Christ says they are poor in the worst way-spiritually impoverished!

      1. It is a situation of which we can relate to all too easily

    1. Both have a door

      1. Philadelphia’s is open and cannot be shut

      2. But for this church Jesus is outside

        1. Outside the church and wanting in

        2. We too often think this is for those lost

C. They are not awful – middle of the road believers

      1. Geographically, this church sat in the valley between the mountains on either side. The water that ran down into it's aqueducts from one mountain was cold spring water

      2. On the other side, the water that ran down into the aqua ducts was hot spring water, and when it mixed it became lukewarm

    1. In spiritual terms, lukewarm means stagnant

    2. It doesn't flow and after sitting in stillness, it decays - this is the picture of the spiritual condition that Jesus was warning about

Matthew 16:26

What does it benefit a person if he gains the whole world but forfeits his life? Or what can a person give in exchange for his life?

If you're hot or cold, that means at least you’re moving in some kind of direction and making some kind of progress

  1. Lukewarm

    1. Best described as outwardly religious

      1. Yet uncommitted and self-complacent

      2. Indifferent toward the Lord, not “fervent in spirit”

Romans 12:11

Don't be lazy in showing your devotion. Use your energy to serve the Lord.

      1. (Rom. 12:11). Equally bad is the fact that they refuse to give their lives wholeheartedly to the Savior. They are part-time in their faith, casual in their walk, and unsettled in their hearts. Deep down they know something isn’t right

Revelation 1:3

Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near.

    1. Your religion doesn’t grip you

      1. It does not form you

1 Corinthians 10:21

You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.

Traits:

  1. They are only half committed to CHRIST - stress programs

  2. They are only half committed to JESUS as GOD.

  3. They are only half committed to evangelism and missions.

  4. Only half committed to stressing holy and pure living

  5. Only half committed to self denial and sacrificial living

  6. Only half committed to [the life of] The Church

  7. Only half committed to attending and staying awake and learning in… Church

  8. Only half committed to [financially] supporting the Church

  9. Only half committed to witnessing

  10. Only half committed to Bible study and prayer

  11. Only half committed to daily devotions

Buy Eye Ointment:

A reference to the famous eye medication/ointment that was produced and sold in ancient Laodicea; this may contain the most cultural references of any particular church in Revelation (eye-salve, hot springs, etc.). But the importance of the eye-salve that Christ refers to is spiritual sight or blindness (whichever the case may be). It is possible to see naturally, but be blind spiritually-just like it is possible to hear physically, but never really "hear" what the Spirit is saying to the churches.
