Woodland Street Pulpit Nashville First Church of the Nazarene June 11, 2000 A.M. "The breath of God" Text: John 20:19-23 John 20:22 Then he breathed on them saying, "Receive the Holy Spirit."labete pneuma a`gion Second aorist active imperative -inclusive plural. INTRODUCTION: We have come to the end of the gospel story - what have we seen? That God has visited his people. John 1:14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. That in his visible physical flesh we saw the invisible God. Jesus was the image of the God and he proclaimed his glory. Colossians 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation; John 1:18 No one has ever seen God; God the only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, has revealed him.He lived the unique life. Most misunderstood. We couldn't accept him ... and could not leave him alone. He lived free of sin.
Look at the scriptures: 1 John 4:9 God's love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. This is the Gospel. He is the way and the truth and the life. He is the invisible God calling us back to a life we had lost. We who think this is our life. The Scriptures teach. 1 John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, to know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. However - We Believe the Lie. 1. The problem of the lie? Romans 1:25 They exchanged the truth about God for the lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed for ever! Amen. 2 Thess 2:11 Therefore God sends upon them a strong delusion, to make them believe the lie, 2. What is the lie? That we can be men without God. That we can please God. That we are capable of godliness. 3. Remember: John 1:4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. So, what was the end of the story. Jesus had been speaking incessantly about the Spirit in the hours leading up to his departure. Now the atoning sacrifice had been made and the time of fulfillment had come. THE STORY:
John 20:21 As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." You are going to live my life. You are going to do what I would do. You are going to be to me as I have been to my Father. Your mission shall be mine ... nothing less! John 14:20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. Then he breathed himself upon them. Why? THE SOURCE: A. The Divine Presence and the Divine Act. 1. Jesus' ministry to the church (not the world). 2. The Work of Christ on the Church. 3. His spirit incarnating our humanity. Romans 8:9 But you are not in the flesh, you are in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Any one who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. Romans 8:6 To set THE MIND ON THE FLESH is death, but to SET THE MIND ON THE SPIRIT is life and peace. The mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God's law, indeed it cannot; B. Defining the new creation: Romans 8:14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. C. The Work of the Church in the Spirit.
THE TEACHING: A. WHO/WHAT IS THE HOLY SPIRIT? John 4:24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. Ephesians 4:30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. He Is God! B. WHY ARE WE TO HAVE THE HOLY SPIRIT? 1 Corinthians 2:11 Revelation For what person knows a man's thoughts except the spirit of the man which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. He Is God Inhabiting Our Humanity as He Did in Christ, Creating a New Humanity Who Live by the Spirit. 1. TEACHING US. 2. CONVICTING US! 3. DRAWING AND INTERCEDING. 4. LIVING OUT GOD'S WILL. 1 Corinthians 2:14 The unspiritual man does not receive the gifts of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. C. HOW DO WE RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT? 1. He is given. 2. From the father through the Son! John 15:26 When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. We must Let Him Be the Lord That He Is for Us to Live the Life That We Would. 1. Oh foolish Galatians. AMPLIFIED 2. Oh wretched man that I am. D. WHO/WHAT COMES TO LIVE IN US? John 14:23 If a man loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE LIFE: A. Life in the Spirit: 2 Peter 1:3 - 4 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, that through these you may escape from the corruption that is in the world because of passion, and become partakers of the divine nature. Some fear the holy one. Some divide God Father is angry - Jesus merciful - Spirit scary He is the true life Empowering Enriching Enabling. He Is the Reason Jesus Came and We Are Here! |
