John 14:22 – 15:11

Judas (not Iscariot) asked him, "Lord, in what manner will you reveal yourself to us, and not to the world?" Jesus answered him, "If anyone loves me he will keep my teachings; my Father will love him, and we will come to them and make him our dwelling. Anyone who does not love me will not heed my words. My word is not my own, the Father who sent me gives what you hear. I have spoken these things to you while still dwelling among you; but the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you.

Peace is what I leave with you; my own peace I bequeath to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not allow your hearts to be frightened or upset. You heard me tell you, I am going away, and I am coming to you. If you loved me, you would rejoice, for I am going to the Father and he is greater than I. I have told this in advance, so that when it occurs, you may believe. I shall not talk to you much longer, for the prince of this world comes, who has nothing in me. So that the world may know that I love the Father – I will do as he ordains. Get up! Let us depart from here!

I am the real vine, and my Father is the farmer. Every branch in me that is unfruitful he removes; every branch that is fruitful he prunes so that it may be abundantly fruitful. Now, you are cleansed through the word, which I have spoken to you. Abide in me, as I in indwell you. Just as no branch is capable of yielding fruit unless it lives in the vine, you cannot unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Anyone who abides in me, as I dwell in him, is abundantly fruitful. Cut off from me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not abide in me withers, and is removed as a branch; these branches are collected and thrown on the fire and burned. If you dwell in me, and allow my teachings to live in you – you may request whatever you desire, and it shall be done for you. This is how my Father is glorified: you are to be abundantly fruitful and demonstrate that you are my disciples. As the Father has loved me, I have loved you. Now live in my love. If you observe my commandments, you will live in my love, just as I have observed my Father's commands and dwell in his love. These things I have spoken to you that my joy may be in you, so that your joy may be full."

  1. Into the Jerusalem night (Eve of Passover):
    1. Let’s remember the evening as it unfolded:
      1. Early in the day two arrived ahead of the rest
        1. They secured the room
        2. With servants they prepared the feast
      2. This night belongs to the heart of Christ
        1. This meal was a divine destiny
        2. Luke 22:15

Jesus said to them, "With deep desire I have desired evpiqumi,a| evpequ, mhsa to eat this Passover lamb with you before I suffer."

          John 13:1

On the Eve of the feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, loved them to the end. (into completion)

        3. A destiny for God and all mankind
    2. Jesus is opening the world to his new realm
      1. But the disciples are in the old
        1. As we all are until our minds are renewed
        2. But the disciples were seeking position

        Luke 22:24

A dispute also arose among them as to which one of them was to be regarded as the greatest.

      2. This is the setting of the foot washing
        1. Christ’s new reign (without rank)
        2. All are servants

Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

    3. This brings us to Judah’s betrayal – to Peter’s betrayal
      1. The natural man
      2. The life lived to self preservation (this is chapter 13)
        1. Then Judas leaves and he says
        2. "Do not permit a troubled heart."
        3. "Trust in me!" "I go to prepare your place ..."

    John 14:3

I will come again and will receive you unto myself, so that where I am you may be also.

  2. To be what he is
    1. Philip, "Lord – show us the Father."
      1. "Philip, have you not seen?"
      2. John 14:9-10

Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, "Show us the Father?" Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father in me? I am not the source of the words that I speak; it is the Father who dwells in me doing his works.

      3. That Christ was the Father given to us
    2. Also know that the one who loves me will see this
    3. John 14:21

Anyone who receives my commands and keeps them, he it is who loves me: and he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him.

    4. This brings us to the aiding
      1. Christ is revealing the nature of the kingdom
        1. The Kingdom of the New Life
        2. The union of God and man
      2. This is to be God’s reign
    5. The reign of (in) a new creation
    6. The disciples’ life is not to be their own
      1. The are to enter joy and peace
        1. Not a "peace like mine" – "My Peace"
        2. All this is tied to "My Word"
      2. So that:
    7. I will reveal myself to you – "I will be yours"

Peace is what I leave with you; my own peace I bequeath to you. I do not give to you as the world gives….As the Father has loved me, I have loved you. Now live in my love. If you observe my commandments, you will live in my love, just as I have observed my Father's commands and dwell in his love. These things I have spoken to you that my joy may be in you, so that your joy may be full

  3. The Hour Had Come
    1. The lamb slain from the foundation of cosmos was here
    2. The reason for Israel – this was why God created Israel
      1. The new covenant was being formulated
        1. A covenant without Temple or
        2. With nothing between God and man
      2. "I am the real Vine!"
    1. I "am the real vine!"
    2. "My Father is the farmer."
    3. "Cut off from me you can do nothing."
    4. "The Father will prune you for a more fruitful life."
    5. "If you are unfruitful you will be cut off."

    7. "Your life will be found in me."
    8. "This is the Father’s glory."
    9. "This is your key to love."

      2. Who is this Christ?

      1. Here is the "seeing" of God
      2. He is to be seen in the transformed disciples
        1. Incarnation into all believers
        2. Those by nature wed to the word
    3. To bring forth harvest is not evangelism
      1. We produce fruit – not branches
      2. He alone brings forth branches
    4. To abide in him is deeper than religion
      1. It has to do with the shared life
      2. The transferred life
    5. This is how he will pray
  1. His prayer:

John 17:22-23

The glory, which you gave me, I have given to them, so that they may be one just as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them as you have loved me.
