Sown
in Secret
II Samuel chapters 11-14
Galatians
6:7
Do
not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow.
The
opening for Sin
He
had prospered for seventeen years
17
years without a defeat
17
years of unbroken prosperity
17
years of the adulation of his subjects
More
souls fall during prosperity than hard times
Bill
Clinton says, “Because I could…”
In
his prosperity he became careless
It
takes a steady hand to carry a full cup
Indulgence
softens the backbone
God
had withheld nothing from him
Parents
who lavish much on their children spoil them
We
could do the same to ourselves
Strength
comes from struggles – good times weaken
Moses
had warned:
Deuteronomy 31:20
When I have brought you into the land
flowing with milk and honey, which I swore to give to your fathers,
and you have eaten and are full and grown fat, you will turn to other
gods and serve them, and despise me and break my covenant.
*
And he spoke specifically about the king
Deuteronomy
17:15-17
You
must set as king over you him whom the LORD your God will choose.
You may choose a foreigner, but one from your brothers. He must not
acquire numerous horses for himself, or send men to Egypt in order to
obtain more horses, for the LORD has said, “You shall never
return that way again.” He must not have many wives or great
wealth for himself, lest his heart turn away.
The
Sin of his life
David
had 50 years of marital strife
His
first wife was his greatest stress
She
had mocked him and married another
1 Samuel 18:20
Now Saul's daughter Michal loved David; and
they told Saul, and the thing pleased him. Saul thought, “Let
me give her to him, that she may be a snare for him.”
A
dozen wives had not filled the void
David
had married young and not so young
2
Samuel 5:13
David took more
concubines and wives from Jerusalem,
All
he wanted and all he sought was his
The
boy was changing
The
lad whose song had calmed Saul
The
boy who slew lion and bear
The
boy who killed Goliath
The
son of Jesse – by Samuel anointed – was growing soft
God
had blessed him beyond all others
He
will die with a heart full of pain
His
family will be a history of conflict
He
sinned one great sin - with many facets
In
the cool of the evening he walked on his patio
The
patio [roof] of the king overlooked all others
In
that day – he saw – he sought – he took the
forbidden
Exodus 20:17
“You shall not set your heart (covet)
on your neighbor's house. You shall not set your heart on your
neighbor's spouse, or servant, man or woman, or ox, or donkey, or any
of your neighbor's possessions.”
I
have heard the David’s across the years:
“I
couldn’t help it”
“Just
wanted a little fun”
“You
don’t understand”
David
met God’s enemy
He
[Lucifer] had met others
He
promised Eve she would be like God
She
partook to her great pain
Her
firstborn was a murderer
He
promised Saul a kingdom
The
man was to never have peaceful sleep
He
sought a witch to hear from God
He
promised Judas powerful friend and wealth
Judas’
name is forever cursed
He
committed suicide
The
Secret seed
It
all came crashing home when he received her letter
2 Samuel 11:5
The woman conceived; and she sent and told
David, "I am pregnant."
Moses’
Law was clear:
David
had schemed in coveting
He
had indulged his lust in adultery
He
had plotted to cover his sin
He
had tried to deceive by using her husband
He
had killed good Uriah
The
whole court knew – and was quiet
Silence
is compliance
Ezekiel 3:17-20
‘Son of man, I have appointed you a
watchman for the house of Israel; whenever you hear a word from me,
you shall warn them for me. If
I pronounce death on the wicked, and you give him no warning, nor
speak out to dissuade him from his wicked way to save his life, that
wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but I will hold you responsible
for his blood. But if you
warn the wicked, and he persists in his wicked way, he shall die in
his sin; but you will live. Again, if a righteous person turns from
his righteousness and commits iniquity, for I allowed a stumbling
block in his path, he shall die because you have not warned him. He
shall die for his sin, and his righteous deeds, which he has done,
shall not be remembered; but his blood I will hold you responsible
for your silence.
Purity
is never to be regained
We
can be restored
We
can be cleansed
But
Psalm
51:3
I know my transgressions, and
my sin is ever before me.
Society
in propriety may cloak sin – God sees it
All
is silent – or is it?
When
all was Peace and security
David
moved on in life as if all was blessed
He
married his final wife
He
awaited the birth of his son
All
seemed to be well
David
said of these days:
Psalm
32:4
Day
and night your hand was heavy upon me; my vitality was sapped as in
the heat of summer.
Nathan
comes
“You
are the man!” – David seeks to escape
The
bay dies
The
prayers of David conflict with the Word of God
The
better the man the dearer the price he’ll pay
Sorrow
deepens with light
Curse
two: David’s daughter Tamar
Curse
three David’s son Amon
Curse
four David’s wives
Curse
five Absalom
The
depth of the hatred of a son for his father
2 Samuel 16:22
So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the
roof. And Absalom went in to his father's concubines in the sight of
all Israel.
Deuteronomy 22:30
" A man shall not take his father's
wife, nor uncover his father's bed.”
Israel
was again a witness
The
mighty are fallen!
The
man after God’s own heart
Even
as David died Adonijah was rebelling
He
was restored and forgiven – but never saw peace again
How
often the words must have burned
2 Samuel 12:9-
Why have you despised the word of the LORD,
to do what is evil in his sight? … Thus says the LORD,
`Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house …
You did it secretly; but I will do this thing before all Israel, and
before the sun.'"
Sown
in secret – suffering is the open
God
is not mocked – what is sown will grow
We
harvest the secret seed
